I have also seen many hardened and exhausted people in the caring profession… Firstly the nursing officer who could not stand the sound my shoes made when I walked she thought they were too loud I had to tiptoe when she did her rounds…or the doctor who  was just too tired to do another operation, honestly he did’nt know who or what was next, I was  in charge on night duty and gave him tea with sugar at 4.00 in the morning.  We took 15 minutes sat down and talked, the system faded into the background, the ward was peaceful and we felt less scared, less responsible, less confused.  Patients used to listen to the nurses night talk.
