I remember a lilac tree in our garden, I remember the smell and exactly where it stood.
My mum would never cut the stems from the tree because she thought they meant death, but really the colour lilac represents an alternative to black that a widow can wear one year after the death of her husband. So it isymbolizes an early death but also an early love.
I have to check this out with my mum – is that here interpretation, her choice or something I made up?
who knows about our lilac tree,
who saw the first bloom from her bedroom window,
who smelt the overpowering aroma of youth
…or was it the presence of death?
they do, when I think about it smell the same
